Injection Technology

Injection technologies in remediation offer a unique method of destroying contaminants in the subsurface through biological and chemical reactions, eliminating the need to manage extracted multiphase contaminants. There are multiple injection technologies that MK has provided and/or assisted in the past, which are listed below.
Ozone: MK has developed and manufactured numerous ozone air sparge injection systems and has installed them in Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. These systems are built to inject air, oxygen, or ozone into multiple wells with a sequential timer system to optimize effectiveness. Customers often combine ozone injection with DPVE to reduce installation costs and minimize operation timelines. They sparge into the perimeter wells during the start of operations, while the DPVE extracts all the free product and hydrocarbons, which pulls the contamination towards the center. Additional perimeter ozone wells are activated as the plume shrinks to treat the residual contamination and polish the dissolved mass along the outer edges. The outermost ozone wells then get turned off as the treatment area recedes. This DPVE ‐ Ozone combination is one of the most effective methods of site closure we have been involved with. MK can build these systems in about 6 weeks.
Propane Injection: A treatment system designed to enhance and train subsurface bioactivity by precise propane injections. The propane is injected first, followed by injections of air. During the air injection period, the remaining propane nutrients are consumed. As the bacteria “get hungry,” they will more actively target contaminants that they are less likely to consume normally or in lower quantities. The Propane will keep them alive in large quantities, and the hunger changes how and what they will consume. MK can build this system in about 8 weeks.
Methane Injection: Variation to the Propane injection above. MK can build these in about 8 weeks.
Surfactant and amendment injections: MK has worked with vendors to implement the extraction portion of the treatment regime.
Thermal Remediation

MK has installed over 66 thermal remediation systems throughout North America and Europe in the last 20 years. The projects have utilized various energy sources, such as electrical resistive heating, gas-fired conductive heating, and high-pressure steam injection. All successfully treated sites range from corner gas stations to multi-acre Superfund sites. MK has 11 sets of thermal treatment systems available.
MK successfully remediated a UST site in Florida utilizing electrical resistive heating. MK included a guaranteed performance contract.
In April of 2024, MK successfully remediated a corner lot (Former dry cleaner) in 60 days. The entire subsurface, down to 22 feet, was heated to above 200°F and the contaminants were extracted via SVE.
If the site specifics allow for thermal treatment, this is the quickest method of active treatment to reach closure. MK can implement Thermal treatment on a UST site in about 6 weeks, with 60‐90 days of operation.

Oxidizers

MK owns and maintains a fleet of oxidizers to treat for VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and other nuisance odorous emissions.
Our inventory includes electric and gas-fired Catalytic and thermal oxidizers, providing a multitude of options to fit your site requirements.
Benefits:
Reduce Operating Costs - At MK, we interlock our oxidizers with the extraction/remediation equipment so that alarms of either system will trigger a shutdown procedure.
Flexibility - MK owns a fleet of oxidizers giving us the ability to provide long-term or short-term rentals as well as providing equipment with shorter lead times.

Stripperators

The Stripperator integrates air stripping and oil/water separation. This unit combines the C Series Oil/Water Separator with the Cascade LP50 Series Air Stripper. An optional product tank can also be incorporated as part of the unit.
This unique MK design allows for the elimination of transfer pumps between processes, and minimizes required floor space. Combining the various processes into one unit also makes the unit very economical.
The SA15b and SA50 have a design limit of 15 and 50 gpm respectively. This limitation occurs on the OWS design to achieve the 60 micron removal. Hydraulically these systems can operate at much higher levels. The SA15b has 1-tray in the Stripper section. The removals, therefore, are identical to the LP501. The SA50 is designed with one (SA50) or two trays (SA50-2) so the removal efficiencies are identical to the LP501 or LP502 respectively.
Oil/Water Separator
The Oil/Water Separator has been designed by MK, specifically for groundwater remediation.
Technical Specifications:
- 3/16” hot-rolled epoxy coated carbon steel construction
- Gasketed lid to allow easy removal & inspection of the coalescing packing
- Coalescing packing constructed of hydrocarbon resistant polypropylene
- Coalescing packing spaced 1-1/2” apart at a 60 degree angle for maximum separation and minimum maintenance
- System(s) available in 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75 gpm models
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
- Separation of lighter than water hydrocarbons shall be done through the use of a combination of baffles and a clog-resistant interception incorporated within the separation system. The interceptor must be easily accessible to permit removal for cleaning
- Integral to the Oil/Water Separator system shall be an intermittent product overflow basin with a minimum volume of 120 gallons.
- Flow into the separator will be through a 3 inch NPT fitting. Flow through the separating unit will be by gravity. Effluent from the separator with be through a 3 inch NPT fitting.
- Within each unit, baffles set perpendicular to the flow shall be supplied in order to dissipate inlet turbulence, to congeal solids for easier removal and to assist in oil/water separation.
- The unit incorporates a hydrocarbon resistant polypropylene corrugated plate interceptor for the means of separation.
- Hydrocarbons that have been separated will exit the separating stage via a 1-1/4” NPT fitting near the top of the separator and flow into the intermittent product overflow reservoir
Ground Water Pump

MK utilizes a multitude of groundwater pumps, styles, and vendors. At MK, we also manufacture our own pneumatic pumps.
Air/Water Separator

MK manufactures most of our air/water separators in-house and has standardized designs in 200/300/500 gallon configurations. High flow, demister, and other custom features are available.

MK SOS

MK Environmental created SOS (Site Optimization System) to keep pushing the evolution of remote monitoring and the increasing demand for tracking system characteristics to optimize remediation. The SOS is engineered to monitor alarm conditions and equipment function for system operations so that project engineers and project managers can enhance their sites’ remediation efforts.
SOS is an expandable system that allows additional input monitoring, creating more opportunities to identify potential problems and early warning detection to help reduce downtime. MK SOS provides alarm notifications, daily reports, and monthly reports, including a history of each input's alarm events. It also includes uptime/downtime hrs broken down by day to help with required runtime reporting.
Additionally, MK SOS is intended to track operating time and help the customer identify routine maintenance items that may be required during future visits so there is no lag in performing the required preventive maintenance.
